Review and Planning (30 credits at level HE6)

During this module researchers will plan out the work for the four modules of their level 3, year 3 work. This will involve reviewing changes in the work role and what has been learned from the degree course to date.

Module Descriptions

Having reviewed where researchers are currently at in terms of both of these they will then identify a focus for an action inquiry and create a research proposal and a research plan. The research that is undertaken at level 3 should be designed to build upon researchers work at level 2 and also fit with their current work context. As part of the planning process researchers will familiarise themselves with the university graduate learning outcomes and plan on a collecting evidence of ‘graduateness’ throughout the year.

Module content will be appropriate to individuals in their work setting and will be supported by learning

facilitators who will help students identify appropriate methodology in order to achieve the module

outcomes. As part of the planning process researchers will discuss their proposed research with work colleagues, their workplace advocate and managers, negotiating permissions and resolving ethical issues connected with their proposed research.

Researchers will conclude the module by reflecting on the review and planning process.

This is a web delivered distance learning module. Students will need to have access to the internet to access learning resources, participate in the online learning community and submit their electronic portfolio for assessment.

All key resources will be available online. In addition many key resources will be work context specific and defined during the planning of the learning activities, with the support of the learning facilitator to take account of the student’s work context.

Transferable employment skills developed in this module include planning a complex project, negotiating permissions for the implementation of plans  and working within formally defined proposal guidelines.

Outline Content

  • Review learning at level 1 and 2 by looking back over researchers work and identifying key learning.
  • Review identified workplace competencies, standards and expectations by revisiting work done in year 1 and 2 identifying changes to competencies, standards and expectations, in relation to researchers current work role.
  • Identify remaining gaps in knowledge through a systematic evaluation of what researchers know and what they need to know. This will inform their action inquiry plans.
  • Develop an action inquiry focus from their evaluation.
  • Develop a proposal for an action inquiry and project plan. This needs to be a detailed research plan identifying resources, timeline, skills to be developed, knowledge required and a dissemination mechanism (exhibition).
  • Reflect on the review and planning process to identify learning.
  • Negotiate permissions and access for a workplace pilot exhibition and exhibition with support of their workplace advocate.
  • Permissions need to be negotiated and access for a workplace exhibition with support of their workplace advocate
  • Plan the identifying, organising and finding of supporting evidence for a range of transferable skills developed through the researchers undergraduate study.

Learning Outcomes (threshold standards)

On successful completion of this module the student will be expected to be able to:

Knowledge and understanding

  1. Identify any gaps in prior workplace requirements and learning
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the concepts of ‘graduateness’ and value added’

Intellectual, practical, affective and transferable skills

  1. Develop a research proposal that addresses complex issues in the workplace
  2. Plan learning activities towards an exhibition of research findings
  3. Critically evaluate the planning process for an exhibition
  4. Plan the preparation of a portfolio demonstrating the achievement of the generic graduate learning outcomes
